Why Professional Epoxy Flooring Matters
The difference between a professional epoxy floor installation and a DIY or discount application comes down to three critical factors: surface preparation, material quality, and application expertise. At COAT, we invest in all three because we know that a floor is only as good as its foundation.
Surface Preparation: The Foundation of Every Floor
Proper surface preparation accounts for roughly 80% of a coating's long-term success. This is where most DIY jobs and discount contractors fail. We use industrial diamond grinders to mechanically profile the concrete surface, creating a texture that allows the epoxy to form a permanent mechanical bond. This process also removes laitance, previous coatings, and contaminants that would otherwise cause adhesion failure.
Before any coating is applied, we test for moisture vapor transmission and address any issues that could cause delamination down the road. We repair cracks, spalls, and damaged areas using appropriate materials matched to the specific conditions of your concrete.
Material Quality: Commercial-Grade vs. Consumer-Grade
The epoxy you buy at a home improvement store is not the same product professional flooring contractors use. Consumer-grade epoxies are typically water-based or low-solids formulations designed for easy application, not long-term performance. COAT uses 100% solids epoxy systems that contain no water or solvents—just pure, high-performance resin and hardener.
Our topcoats are polyaspartic or polyurea formulations that provide superior UV stability, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance compared to standard epoxy topcoats. This is why our floors don't yellow, fade, or wear through like cheaper alternatives.
The COAT Process
Every COAT installation follows our proven process:
- Initial consultation and on-site evaluation to assess concrete condition and discuss options
- Diamond grinding to achieve proper surface profile (minimum CSP-3)
- Crack and damage repair using flexible or rigid fillers as appropriate
- Moisture mitigation if testing indicates elevated vapor transmission
- Application of primer coat for maximum adhesion
- Application of pigmented base coat with broadcast media (if applicable)
- Application of UV-stable topcoat for protection and aesthetics
- Quality inspection and customer walkthrough
- Detailed aftercare instructions and warranty documentation
